Saturday 5 - Sunday 6 October 2013 - Poole and Bournemouth Marathon Festival 2013

October 2013 is a pivotal entry into the sporting calendar with runners from all over the world due to converge on the coastal towns of Bournemouth & Poole for the chance to run in the inaugural Bournemouth Marathon Festival.

The Bournemouth Marathon Festival is a world-class, engaging and inclusive event. It captures and promotes the essence of a vibrant, healthy and active lifestyle through a series of fun and challenging mass participation running races, all inspired by the stunning coastal arena of Bournemouth and Poole.

What’s on offer?

There is a race for everyone at the Bournemouth Marathon festival weekend - from the elite international athlete to youngsters still at primary school.

Here’s how our first marathon festival weekend unfolds:

SATURDAY 5 OCTOBER 2013

2pm: Bournemouth Marathon Festival Children’s Race (6-10 year olds) - 1.5K distance, Starting and finishing near the BMF Hub in the Lower Gardens, Bournemouth this beautiful coastal route takes in the Bournemouth Pier.

2.30pm: Bournemouth Marathon Festival 3K Junior Race (11-14 year olds) - 3k distance, Starting and finishing near the BMF Hub in the Lower Gardens, Bournemouth this beautiful coastal route takes in the Bournemouth Pier.

4pm: Bournemouth Marathon Festival Supersonic race - 10k distance
Fast and flat, the Supersonic is the ultimate in 10k speed. Starting and finishing near the BMF Hub in the Lower Gardens, Bournemouth, this beautiful coastal route heads towards Boscombe before turning back towards Bournemouth and going around the historical Bournemouth Pier. It then moves into Poole on the flat and super fast beachfront promenade then turns to finish in the beautiful Bournemouth Lower Gardens.

7pm: Bournemouth Marathon Festival Speed of Light road race - 5k distance 
Utilising the phenomenal prom and pier area at dusk, the 5k race is a running experience like no other, with the emphasis on light around the route. Starting and finishing near the BMF Hub in the Lower Gardens, Bournemouth, this beautiful coastal route takes in the Bournemouth Pier.

SUNDAY 6 OCTOBER

8AM: Bournemouth Marathon Festival Half Marathon, starts at Kings Park Drive. The Bournemouth Half Marathon course follows the full Marathon route, taking in both Boscombe and Bournemouth Piers along this coastal route. This is running as it should be. 10AM: Bournemouth Marathon. Start points is Kings Park Drive. Inspired by the stunning coastal arena of Bournemouth & Poole this is the pinnacle of endurance athletics. Full route description can be found on the website www.run-bmf.com 

Some other interesting facts ...

  • More than 800 race crew will come together over the marathon weekend to look after all the runners. It is thanks to them that runners’ thirst is quenched, bags transported and that all important medal is given out at the end.
  • There are nearly 200 charities affiliated with the Bournemouth Marathon Festival and more than £500,000 is hoped to be raised for good causes.

Saturday 12 October 2013 - Autumn Wander on Brownsea

Brownsea Island

Venture out with the ranger and discover more about the nature and wildllife on Brownsea in autumn. Explore the island at this special time of year, when red squirrels can be seen on the ground and in low branches and our amazing autumn colours are on display. Booking essential, spaces limited, 12/10/2013. 2pm.

Saturday 26 October - Sunday 3 November 2013 - Children's red squirrel walks on Brownsea

Brownsea Island

Join our special children's walk. Spot red squirrels, learn how they bury their food and see if you can remember where you put your secret supply of chestnuts on this guided woodland walk. Booking advisable, spaces limited, every day from 26/10/13 - 3/11/2013 Walks at 11.15am & 2.15pm.

Saturday 26 October - Sunday 3 November 2013 - Half term spooky adventures with the Famous Five on Brownsea

Every day from 26/10/13-3/11/13. Take part in this free adventure trail and join the Famous Five as they try to solve the spooky island mystery. Pick up a free trail from the visitor centre.

Tuesday 29 October & Thursday 31 October 2013 - Outdoor activity days on Brownsea Island

Come and join our outdoor activity team for an action packed island adventure. Take part in instructor led activities, choose from archery, low ropes and den building. Thursday 31 October 2013 - Eerie walk on Brownsea Island

Join us for spooky tales and eerie happenings on Brownsea Island. Enjoy this rare opportunity to see the island at night. Learn about the creatures that come out when it gets dark and hear some of the scary tales from the island's past. Then calm down with hot dogs and hot chocolate. Booking essential.
